Just got a Blc. Fritz Nickolaus "Spring Dance"

I just got this today from Kawamoto Orchids. I need some tips on its care. I have a bunch (10 phalaenopsis orchids and a dendrobium hybrid) already and wanted to try something new. What lighting does it like?

I've had a Blc. Fritz Nickolaus "Spring Dance" for a few years. It's a beautiful dark flower with a crushed velvet lip and a nice fragrance. Cattleyas need more light than phals but protect it from the mid-day direct sun. They need to get good and dry between waterings but soak it really well when you do water. As long as the lead pseudobulb is plump, the plant is getting enough water. While phals grow all year long, many cattleyas grow during the spring and summer and slow down or stop growing during the winter. For that reason they require less water and only a little fertilizer during the winter. But water and fertilize regularly during the spring and summer growing season. That's a really good cattleya. I hope you have success with it.

Because of the hybriding that goes into so many orchids today, one caveat is to continue to fertilize as long as it is continuing to grow. If the pbulb has reached maturity then stop or lower the fertilizing until spring. I have cats that are still pushing new growth and it is elongating even though it is getting cooler and the sun is dropping south more each day. If you stop feeding the new growth when it is still growing steadily then you won't have the energy built up in the pbulb to bloom or the bloom will be less than ideal.

Looking at that box brings back great memories of ordering from Kawamoto and waiting for that big box(es) to arrive to the building!

They do such good job packing orchids!

One of the cattleyas I got from them last year is now blooming again.

Regading cattleya culture, I don't really see anything much different than growing dendrobiums (since you already have them), so they should be easy for you.
