I have a large wooden basket for hanging vandas but I am not using it. I would like to put some sort of cattleya in it for a nice display in the house but I'm not sure what kind. I would be potting it, not letting it grow freely in the basket. What are your opinions on the best kind of showy cattleyas? Colors are open for debate, and a plant with some height to it would look nice also.
my alltime favorite cattleya is jose marti 'mothers favorite'....it is a very large white flower with yellow throat, and has a nice scent.....it grows very fast for me, has attractive foliage, and the leads seem to want to spread out, so it gives a nice round appearance....excellent for display! hausermann's orchids carries them all the time I think....get a big one!
How big is the basket? One nice thing is that you don't need worry about over-potting. You can put a small orchid in a big basket and it will be fine. I agree with the previous post, Jose Marti 'mothers favorite' is a good candidate. Some that have done well for me in baskets are Pot. Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick', Blc. Memoria Anna Balmores 'Convex' and C. Aloha Case. I think Rlc. Memoria Crispin Rosales would also work well.
