cattleya guttata "exotic orchids*exotic blue" first bloom
first time flowering for this baby.
THE LABEL SAY Catleya guttata coerulia (exotic orchids x exotic blue)
i don't really see the coerulia on it, , and the flower shows petals wider/bigger than normal C guttatas, this is either a truly exceptional guttata, or someone gave me a plant that it is not guttata, (still good looking tho)
the lip size and color is also quite impressive however, the only defect is that the lip does not cover the column itself. the plant just opened flowers this morning, i believe the petals and sepals will get a deeper bronze color.
thoughts ?
Antonio.

Very good looking! I think you are right about it not being pure guttata though. The lip and petals are very wide and the color of the lip seems really intense. Its not a species I'm very familiar with though.

i am about to send email to the nursery who supplied this plant.
i just measured the flower and it is nearly 4 inches so size is good but within the species . i am trying to find taxonomy information for guttatas. and so far i am unable to find it.
it also smells like guttata. lol. the only thing that is really making me doubt is how wide petals and sepals are.
(if hybrid, would like to know the name of it. HA!!)
i would like to see the experts look at it, and give me their opinion,
Antonio.
Ps Thanks Sonja, and Steve!

well, after talking to a friend of mine. he thinks its a form of C tigrina, or maybe a leopoldii, with wider petals,
i just threw emails to Mr Keller (brazil) he is an expert of brazilian Cattleyas.
i am adding a couple of Outstanding Cattleyas (not mine) it is just to fuel the discussion.
in both pictures (specially tigrina) the plant shows a round form with wide sepals and petals.

Can't help with your question. The intended results of selection and line breeding are outstanding flowers far from the type form. Is the plant very tall?
Not a coerulea though.

the plant is just about 30-35 cm tall , size is consistent with First blooming(2 flowers) of Leopoldii, gutatta , not sure about tigrinas , since if this is one it would be my first one.
quite honestly whatever it ends up to be (species or hybrid) it is a keeper.
but the more i look and search the more i am getting convinced that this plant MIGHT be a tigrina.
there is still a lot of confusion about leopoldii/gutatta/tigrina. for what i can read they were all part of leopoldii.
something here from AOS worth reading.
"Long known as Cattleya leopoldii Verschaff. ex Lem. and before that, Cattleya guttata var. leopoldii (Verschaff. ex Lem.) Linden & Rchb.f., this orchid is still confused by many with Cattleya guttata. It is true that both have spotted flowers and a bright fuchia midlobe of the lip, but there are more differences than similarities between the two. Identifying the two will be the topic of another essay, but for now, the easiest way to tell C. tigrina and C. guttata apart is by blooming season. C. tigrina flowers in early summer from a green sheath, whereas C. guttata flowers in late summer (or early autumn) from a dried sheath."
mine bloomed without a sheet (uncommon but possible)
now reading that, the guttata albencens (to the right of the picture), bloomed from a green sheet. so according to AOS it is a Tigrina ?
ha!
Confusing!
Antonio.

Solved! , it is actually a very COMPLEX hybrid.
parents :
BLC weaianae leopard "ching hua" ( BLC peach cobbler x C. Penny Kuroda )
Kudos to Jerry Fischer he was the one who solved the mystery .
still a keeper, but she now can have her real name on the tag!
Cheers
Antonio.
