I'm looking for a big-ish species cattleya. I want something that has big, big flowers. Right now I grow under T5s but I could get a smaller big cattleya for now until I get a small greenhouse. I've only had cattleya and potinara hybrids and don't know of many species. Also a lot of the things I have are smaller and I want something with big flowers that has a wow factor. Reccomendations? I'd take hybrids but I'd really like a species....
Do you mean a big plant? C. guttata could be 6-feet tall (according to the page). If big, showy, classic flowers, C. lueddemanniana or C. warscewiczii? I personally prefer smaller Cattleya, though.
lueddemanniana has very large flowers and actually a small plant as labiate catts go. C. warscewiczii is also large flowered, floriferous, but a large plant. a couple feet tall at maturity.
I have a C. lueddemanniana and I agree, the plant is relatively small to the large bloom size. I really like mine. It also seems to put out multiple growths more readily than some of my cattleyas.
Go to Santa Barbara Orchid Estates or Sunset Valley Orchids for great info, pics, and plant/flower sizes. I would go with a hybrid for what you want. And you can find standard size (12 inches) catts that have very large(6 inch) flowers.
