I have a question about the hydromount for all of you experienced orchid growers. I haev never mounted an orchid before. I love the way this mount presents the orchid.

What orchids do you think this would work well with?

Are there catts that it wouldn't work with? Varities of catts that would work better?

If mounting catts on it, would they get too heavy or need to be re-mounted when new eyes and growths got going?

Before I invest money in the mount I would love to work these questions out in my mind. I would greatly appreciate help.

I'm interested too. I would think more compact ones and maybe ones that like a drier habitat.

I would like to know if the mount seeps water at a fast rate or slowly so that it will hold water for a few days or more. Or does it run all over. We had some unglazed small pots that were the same idea but water leaked out of the bottom of them too fast and not as much out the sides as was intended.

It is already mounted when I bought it. According to the tag, this is mounted 2 years ago. It is not growing season yet. So I shouldn't water it too often. Correct?

According to OrchidWiz, the species involved in your hybrid all have a drier cooler winter. Mostly late fall, early winter. But they don't dry out completely. Since spring is nearly here (you wouldn't know it around here) it may be starting to grow soon.

Using a mount like this will work for any cattleya really. Ju st adjust the size of the mount based on how strong a grower u catt is and how tall its leaf & PB gets. I am not a fan of moss at all so I wouldn't really recommend it at all. Catts are epiphytes and do actually like to dry out before watering. So despite having to water more often when its hot they will establish and grow very well. If you want to put humidity trays under it that's fine too. But watering would probably best by a spray bottle. I am pro natural mounts like drift woods & fern bark; but we all can get creative too

Maybe you should also post the pics and website in the section Growing on Mounts - You may get more input or inspire a few people that don't catch your post here!
Again - beautiful mount! Also the stand you have it on is very nice and really adds to the dramatic flare of the display!!!!

I had the same thought, but I also have a really cool piece of driftwood I found ont he beech in the Turks & Caicos that I've been soaking for the past month! Decisions, decisions!

Go with the driftwood. There was a product similar to this a couple of years ago called "swamp sticks". Failed in the long run. Mineral salt build up in the stick killed roots.
