I'm sad to say that its definitely looking like Thrips are living on or around your cattleya. You need to get them sprayed. Usually they will tell you once a week for three weeks and then every month after that you should have a regular scheduled spray.

No, Neem oil is a natural antibacterial agent. You will need something else.

Oh no - so sorry!
I think neem oil should work on thrips, tho looking around the web - some say it does work (if nothing else, it IS an oil, and that will kill lots of pests), others say "no" Other recommendations are insecticidal soap, or pyrethrin product

You can try it, but I'm almost sure the neem oil does the job of removing fungus etc.

SJF- have you examined those blasted buds and see any little bugs? thrips are small but if the infestation was bad enough to cause this damage, you would see lots of them.
With that said, I don't think this is thrip damage at all. Thrips will either do no harm on flowers eating only the pollen, or if they do harm the flowers, you will see lots of little scars that are clear (they are sucking insects) or black and dry (also due to sucking and then dead and dried up tissue show up as black or clear).
So I would not recommend spraying anything without knowing the cause for sure.
Have you moved your plants around? is the area getting draft? any gas leaks or fruits nearby?
To me, this looks like some physiological disruption or environmental factors.

I still believe its thrips. Unless its in a place where the blooms can get wet and stay wet overnight n thus cause rot, under a dripping source of water or its constantly damp, I believe its thrips. It doesn't have to be an infestation to cause such damage to blooms either. A monthly spraying for maintenance is always recommended.

Hi,
I wish I had loops to look at it more closely. I got it in the beginning of Feb.
I haven't moved it since I bought it. It is in an upstairs bathroom. No fruits or chemicals. One of the buds was opening/partially open. I am so disappointed.
I had my surgery yesterday. I will go up later and check on it.
