Default Epi radicans

Hello:

So from what I know, Epi radicans is suppose to be SUPER easy to grow. I got a few cuttings off ebay a little while ago and they looked fine, so I potted them up with some chunky orchid bark and some finer stuff and put them in a west facing window for the winter and it seems that they're turning a purplish colore (the leaves). I've been watering once per week and misting when I think it's going to be hot in the window during the daytime. Any thoughts? Has anyone else had their Epi radicans turn purple? Too much light? Too little?

Help!

Thanks!

Cattleya type plants turning red and/or purple is good. It means they are getting enough light to bloom properly. Some will say that they are getting too much light, but my experience tells me otherwise. I crank up the light on all my Catts so they turn red/purple. They tend to respond with large growths and outstanding blooms.

Edit: FYI-I don't grow this species, but grow tons of other Catt types.

So isurus79 you think that it's a good thing? I haven't seen any new growth on it since I got it. I guess we'll just wait this one out.

Thanks.

From your description, I would say its fine. Do you have any pics of the plant? That would help in getting you a more precise answer!

This was my first orchid years ago - We were separated at some point but now have 3 new cuttings from ebay as well. One is already sprouting new roots on every node. This one will go crazy for you. Only suggestion is maybe easy on the light when getting the cutting to root. Once it roots good luck killing it !

Nothing to worry about! I have dozens & dozens of these in pots, in basins, in large pots with coconut husk, mounted on broken clay pots on walls and on coconut husks hanging from my palms. These are extremely hardy, low maintenance, and not fussy whether you give it full sun or bright and dappled direct sun. Leaves will range from medium green to a purplish hue as well. Either way it has never failed to bloom for me consistently from the end of autumn back around till the following summer. Maybe if you asked me I could have given you several blooming size plants for free. Mind you this is just one colour of the several around my yard.
