While my species of this is small, the Green Hornet I have is huge. It started in a 4" basket 5 years ago, and is currently out growing a 18" basket, AND, forever in bloom now.

Really cool. I have mine labelled as Enclyclia/Prosthechea cochleata... looks like it's one of those that keeps changing. Not sure I have seen the name Anacheilium before, or if I have I've forgotten.

Love the colours of that fragrant one. Really nice purple on it.

Mine has survived my best attempts at killing it, not flowered in a while but at least is growing well again just now.

I have one of mine in bark mix, though im not sure how much bark is actually left, looks like its all roots. So I do tend to water it freely. The only times it stops flowering for me is when I forget to water it frequently. Fortunately its drought resistant, but it won't flower unless I'm watering it every other day or so.
The other one is in sphagnum which dries out daily in my apartment. It wasn't until I was watering it every single time it got dry that it began to flower.

I guess I was wrong on both counts. It seems to be the oldest name and the currently accepted name too.

I don't know which name you are referring to be oldest and currently accepted. If you meant Anacheilium cochleatum, actually KEW gives Prosthechea cochleata is the current accepted name...

Mine is in S/H. It was doing really well in that until I reportted to try and remove the old roots that had originally been in bark. All the roots then died back. It's finally over the last part of the summer and even it seems over the winter, grown some nice looking new roots netting the lecca. Hopefully it will pick up again now.

A few things I'd like to point out....

First, I've often heard this is a great orchid for first timers. I'm not at ease with this assessment. I mean, it grows really fast and needs little extra care, other than watering it frequently. and that, is the crux in my perplexity. A novice orchid grower, as well as the seasoned one, needs to learn proper culture, and usually, this means learning how to NOT give your orchid too much love. Seriously though, you cannot over love this orchid. lol

I have mine in cheap box store bark. The kind that most growers down here shy away from because it breaks down too quickly. Not a problem for this orchid. Within a few years, it will outgrow whatever you potted it in, so you will be forced to repot it frequently. Again, lol

And lastly, on a more serious note, Anacheilium cochleatum was the original name, from the 1840's but it seems with the RHS and AOS, the Prosthechea is what is now the proper name, though it had its hayday in between with Encyclia, and Epidendrum in between. x3 lol

The one I'm looking to get is called Encyclia lancifolia x Epicattelya Miva Etoile on the grower's website. He's no very up to date with names usually. From what I found Encyclia is an old name of Prosthechea cochleata. As for the Epicattleya parent, it's likely called something else as well.
