I heard that there were dendrobium for sale in a local grocery store. I went there planning to buy one, I hadn't seen one for sale in years. They only had white ones in bloom and I'm not fond of white [too much exposure to snow] so the nice lady offered to sell me a purple one out of bloom for $7! The only thing is, I still don't have one blooming.

So funny! I am going to hold out until I begin getting some blooms. I would just bring home a rootless noid phal (all that is available), nurse it until it gets roots, then end up giving it away...I have done this every year. :/

Usually all that is available here are phals too. There are some cyms in one store, but I already have 4 and they take too much space. I have another phal about to open soon. I agree. We just have to wait and admire the photos on Orchid board.

I folded and went ahead and ordered some orchids. It is likely too cold to ship for a while and only one will be in bud but I feel much better.

I just got a price list from a grower here in BC that uses heat packs. I think I will behave myself and wait until spring. I have another phal opening it's first bud, but it is white. A neighbour gave it to me. I like colour.

Wow! Am I the only exception here? Our HOS meeting was last night and I took 12 blooming plants. I have more to come within the next month or two. The display table was full of beautiful blooms that others brought. Including Paphs. vandas, an angraecum, etc. The winning hybrid was a huge Catt hybrid just covered with flowers. The species winner was a lovely B. nodosa.
My plants were mostly in the Cattleya alliance but I had a Dend. glomeratum. Is it your culture or location that keeps you all from having blooms this time of year?

Wow! That must have been quite a wonderful display! I actually haven't had much bloom this winter so it hasn't been too fun. Most of my catts are either still years from blooming or just getting close. And, I guess, most of the others are spring/fall or summer bloomers or, yes, not yet blooming size. I do have a few winter bloomers. Brassavola Little Stars (it is late this year!), sedirea japonica, bulbo ambrosia, burana beauty, and haraella rectrocalla have buds that are getting very close to opening. Soph. cernua and oncidium cheiroporum (nearly finished) are blooming now.

White phals are always very pretty. I'd like to find a white Phal equestris. I ordered stuff I planned to order anyway. Hope you have some blooms soon!
