coccinea 4n's last a long time in flower.
Depending on the temperatures, I'd say at least six weeks,

I once saw a huge specimen of this in a greenhouse owned by a man I bought orchids from in Ontario. It was gorgeous! But he advised me mot to get one. He said that they can be picky and don't bloom very long.

Thank you all for your comments - I am glad you like the pics.
Vanda_lover:
coccinea is a cool grower and the 2N is more difficult to grow - I have a coccinea (2N) X Laelia purparata and it is barely hanging on. But, the (4N) lines are to be more heat tolerant, have larger and longer lasting blooms and are overall more vigorous. The plants look great with lots of new growth and I am very happy with that. I was just concerned about whether I may have received (2N) lines instead of (4N) as there is really no way to know outside of the attributes noted being displayed in the plant or have DNA run. Not really that interested right now, maybe someday.
Well, thanks again for looking -
Have a great 2013.
Steve

Beautiful pictures and a well-grown plant! Mine is in bloom also, but I find the 4N clones much slower growing than the 2N.

As it happens I was in Golden Gate Orchids a few weekends ago, and his 4n Sophronitis coccineas were in bloom, and really beautiful! I was SO tempted to get one, but found a brilliant orange masdevallia I couldn't keep my eyes off. I did notice that the SCs had flowers of varying sizes on the same plant. Colors were intense. BTW, he has about the cleanest greenhouses I've been in. It's a huge place, and I felt like the proverbial kid in a candy store.

Hello everyone -
Good to be back - have been spending last few days in hospital with my mother who has cancer. It has been very stressful! Needed an orchid-break! I had no idea I was starting such an interesting thread! I have admired the coccinea for years and finally got two, but had no idea there was such odd behavior in them! The largest plant I have came from Golden Gate Orchids and it was the one I initially posted about. It since has developed 6 blooms and has at least 3 more to buds, so needless to say I am elated. Interestingly, it has striped blooms, but you only see this in the photos, not a "naked eye" sort of coloring. The other one I bought was smaller, and came from New World Orchids - the color and size was better, but the plant was smaller and only produced two blooms.
I would love to visit Golden Gate and to have a first hand account is great - good to hear they have a nice clean greenhouse.
Thank you all for your input and help - I really appreciate it!
Steve

So sorry to hear about your mom, Steve. That's got to be one of the most stressful times possible. Wishing you both the best.
And yes, I think you'd enjoy going to GG Orchids. I found out about them from Ron Hanko's spectacular photos.
