Doesn't look good at the moment but I couldn't pass it up for free.

Any recommendations from you experienced keepers? I already have it in brighter light and better temp conditions than it was in.

Water, water, & water! It looks dehydrated. As a matter of fact, hold off on the bright light for now until its bulbs plump up a bit and the leave look a bit better and you see active growth. If a porous media water every time the media is dry otherwise spread out the watering. Lastly start fertilizing once you see any sign of active growth.

Pull it out of the pot to see if the roots are any good. If its just too dry, then soak it in the sink over night. If the roots are trashed (ie. rotted) then its whole new ball game.

That too. I must say that this one looks neglected as opposed to a heavy hand with water.

Check the roots nonetheless, that will give a more clear picture as to what to do next.

Roots don't look too incredibly bad. It does have some new healthy growth. I've got it soaking at the moment. How should I proceed?

Well from what you're telling me you seem to be in good shape. If the roots are putting out growths your main concerns are just to follow the above indo. Water frequently allowing it to dry between watering, and don't put it in too much bright light for the time being. The less the stress the plant is under the better.
