Brassavola cucullata with rusty tips
Default Brassavola cucullata with rusty tips

Hi all, thought I'd say hello with my first photo post. B cucullata tops the list of my favorite brassavolas. This one, labeled 'rusty tips' for the obvious reason, has had its best blooming this summer, with half a dozen flowers in July and a second blooming in August. I grow it mounted under shadecloth on my patio and bring it indoors to enjoy the flowers when in bloom. They are quite long-lasting.

Very, very pretty, and an interesting plant too with those pendant leaves. How long are the leaves? Is this another species from the Brassavola genus that's fragrant at night, or are the flowers scented in the daytime too? Strict warm grower, in your experience, or tolerant of a wider range of temperatures? Sorry for all the questions, but I really have admired this species for quite a while and would love to find one. Thank you--and congrats on the beautiful blooms.

Steve

Thanks for the kind messages, folks. To Steve, the longest leaves on this one are 18 inches. I've had the plant for six years. It was a wee thing when I acquired it and has grown like topsy. From what I've read, B cucullata is reputed to be an intermediate grower. Mine stays outdoors all year, in the heat of South Florida summer and even during our occasional winter temperature dips so long as the weather warms up within a few days. I generally throw a bed sheet over the plants if temps drop below 55F to keep them out of the wind. I haven't noticed a fragrance during the daytime but, then, I probably haven’t given it a sniff test. I find it a very rewarding plant.

Thanks very much for the cultural information. If you plant can take temperatures into the 50s without any ill effects, I might give it a try. Appreciate your reply!

Steve, please note I corrected the post above. I cover the plants if the temps go below 55F and if it stays that way for over a couple of days it comes indoors. It might be fine in lower temps but I have no experience with that. If the mount is wet it comes in immediately.
