Would it be possible for you to grow a mini hybrid of cattilaya on a peice of wood?

yes if you keep it moist enough, and its spelt cattleya.

Absolutely! Mounted orchids definitely require more watering than potted, but many are epiphytes (grow on trees), so mounted is much more like how they would grow in nature, than in a pot.
