Wow, that was the worst attempt at mockery I've seen from you James, especially since Mira and I were saying that its fine to use valid taxonomical synonyms, as the all mean the same thing, hence the term 'synonym'.

Hey Cody- I can't answer or comment for James but I would like to tell you how I took his comment. I read it as a joke and not at you or Mira but about the big tadoo about the kautskyi/neokautskyi and Laelia/Cattleya thing but I could of read it wrong too.

I totally agree with yours and Mira's comments earlier in the thread. Who cares if you use synonyms? They mean the same thing so why does it matter if you use them? As long as people know what you are talking about that is all that should matter. Learning synonyms only widens people's vocabularies and knowledge. Pretty much what Mira said.

Nice flowers! I just bought a yellow, a burana beauty. I discovered I had almost all white or purple orchids and so I am trying to add variety (as long as they have fragrance).
To be honest, I like being corrected here on the board as it saves me from being corrected at my OS meeting. The OS is just trying to be helpful, too, I know, but I'd rather get the proper info when I am not standing in front of everyone, holding my orchid, and trying to think what to say next. Yes, there are many synonyms but moving forward keeps us speaking the same language. I was pleased to be given the correct name for my phal Malaysia x var. Borneo. I also have an 'oncidium' Mendenhall 'Hildos' from a different vendor. Certainly, these names are valid synonyms and people can figure out which orchids these are but...these are not going to to fly at my OS.

Wonderful cross, Wynn Dee! Thanks for sharing.

BTW, the book that larned me all my plant names was written in 1850 and what you have there is definitely an Epidendrum. Seriously, while there's nothing wrong with using outdated names, making it a point of pride or dissing on scientists and scientific names is pretty silly...

I wasn't making it a point of pride or dissing scientists or scientific names. All the names used have been scientific names they just are from different times. I just like to still call them Laelias instead of Cattleyas. I know about the name changes. I did not know about neokautskyi though and I except that name too. I just didn't like the other member saying I was wrong when both names are valid. Laelia kautskyi is used more still anyway. Fred Clarke was the one who told me the parents name. He still uses the older name so why is it such a big deal?

It seems every time someone posts a picture of something in the Cattleya alliance someone has to correct you on your post about the Laelia/Cattleya and other name changes. I think it's totally fine as long as you do it in a tasteful way since it does educate people. What I don't like is when they argue with you about it and make it sound like only they are right. Synonyms are synonyms. We aren't at an AOS judging its just Orchid Board.

All I wanted to do was share my plant. Thanks for the nice comments about it.
