Realize this an old thread but wanted to get one as they are offered at RF as a mericlone. I thought it was a new offering maybe just for them. I mean there are plenty of Bangkok Sunsets around but I hadn't seen any Honey Bee. Must have just missed them. You said you got it at Redlands in 2012 but did you buy from R.F or some other vendor. Yea I know 10 years ago but was hoping you still had it and kept records. Did you get a mericlone? Noticing a difference on some that have been offered by others that don’t say if mericlone or not. I will have to check records on when Honey Bee was named. I suspect not, as they seem to have different colors and certainly a paler lip. RF’s mericlone Honey Bee has a more vibrant lip. This one seems to be paler and some other difference in flower color somewhat. Of course you said it was the first time it bloomed for you, but didn’t know if it was the plant’s first time. That can make a big difference. Would love to see an updated photo if you still have it. 2012 to 2022.
How big has it gotten. My blooming Aer. houlletiana ‘Alba’ isn’t all that big which I like but I would like for the inflorescences to get longer and more of them and for the plant to make some growths for a specimen. I really like specimens vs just constantly dividing them. It seems back when I first got into orchids in the 1970s most people worked for specimens. Of course we had osmunda back then and it was easier, I think so anyway.
RF’s site doesn’t mention the fragrance or I didn’t see it but … my Aer. houlletiana ‘Alba’ is highly fragrant so a chance on this mericlone. I think all of these are very fragrant and I know the Alba was expensive from Motes.
Of course the difference in color could be professional photography setting. Or my eyes — that’s always a distinct possibility too.
