Just wanted to share a few pics of some baby Cuban Encyclias (Enc. Pyriformis) I purchased from EBay. I planted them yesterday in some moss. I placed them outside in shade with ziplock bags over the pots to keep humidity high until they settle. I was told it will be at least two years before I see any blooms.
They look nice green. I wonder if 2 years is a bit optimistic. I would think more 4 or 5 years. they look like plants just out of a flask. I would be careful of adapting them to a lower humidity environment. I would make some humidity dome with a 2 l. soda bottle by cutting the bottom off (and keep it out of direct sun when using that)
Thanks Stefpix! Yes I thought so too and think you may be right. These things look like they are waaaay out of giving any blooms. I grow bonsai, so patience is something I have aquired
I will do my best to keep them in a humid environment.
I wouldn't be surprised if they bloomed sooner. Encyclias always bloom within 2 years for me. (tampensis, bocourtii, prismatocarpa) all bloomed within 2 years, sometimes in the first year after deflasking.
yeah but the climate in Hollywood FL is different than northern NJ. Living in southern FL is equivalent to having a greenhouse in the NE, where the cool / cold season sometimes is 7 months and the humidity is in the single digits during winter. Now I have a bunch of orchids that started growing after months of stagnancy. In FL probably the growing season is twice as long compared to where I am.
