Your Sl. Pole Star should be called Cattleya Pole-Star, that is the correct name for it. I checked the RHS. and it isn't registered.

Wynn Dee,
Cattleya Pole-Star was registered by Kokusai in 1982, the originator ( the person who made the cross ) was T. Ishii.

I know about the name changes. I prefer to keep the old names since they change things around all the time. You can find more info on the plants by using the old names too. I know Pole Star is registered. I was asking about Sl. Pole Star x C. loddigesii.

You missunderstand me, your cross that you have there isn't registered. Now about the name changes, if you register this cross you have to accept the name that it will get, that is it will get 'Cattleya whatever' because both parents are now "Cattleya's'.
I don't care about people who don't or can't except the correct name of their plants, that is if you want to call it Lc. or C. that is up to you, but it's NOT Pole Star it is Pole-Star, I'm sorry for wasting my time in looking it up for you.

Seems to be a bit of fuss over just a hyphen....
Beautiful flowers, regardless of name.

Thanks Mapp! Seems to be a bit of a fuss to me too. Oh well I like my plant and I don't care if the tag doesn't have a hyphen in it anyway.

I do know it is not registered. Someone already told me that in an above post. My intentions of asking if it was registered or not was out of pure curiosity. I'm not planning on registering the cross and I do know if I did it would be a Cattleya. It is not that I won't or don't except the new names I just prefer to go by what the tag says. You are making a big deal out of a hyphen. When you look online it always comes up without the hyphen and my tag doesn't have one. I'm not going to write a new tag just to put a hyphen in it. Santa Barbara Orchid Estate sells Sl. Pole Star and they don't have a hyphen in it either and they call it a Sophrolaelia. Maybe you should call them up and correct them too.
What bothers me is that 95% of the time when someone posts a picture of their plant on here and they go by the older name someone has to correct them. I'm totally fine with people educating others on the name changes but it is the way it is said that bothers me. How about saying something nice about the plant first and then saying something like this: "What a beautiful orchid! I just wanted to let you know that this is now classified as a Cattleya just in case you don't know that yet." If you word it nicer, you would get a warmer response. The way you corrected me and the wording you used was kind of know it all-ish.
I post my orchids on here to share with others not to have someone get mad at me because I didn't use the newest fad name. The great thing is that most people don't have a need to do that on this forum. They just enjoy the flowers.

Wynn Dee,
Sorry that I have caused you to be upset. It was not done on purpose. It is true that 'Silken' told you that the cross was registered, Orchidwiz is a very good program but NOT the most up to date program. The RHS. is the site to use and in my experence can be many months more up to date, so I did a check on the RHS for you and came up empty. I then had to do a search looking for your plant and I posted the result of my search. As for the comment on the 'Hyphen' well lets say I only post what the RHS says is the correct name.
I will try in the furture to explain my postings in a better way, but after 45 years of growing and naming orchids I find it hard to change, I just like to keep up to date with things.
Once again I'm sorry that I have upset you.

I'm not upset I was just a little annoyed. It's not the first time I have been corrected on the name changes.
Thanks for apologizing. Everyone has their preference with the name changes and I respect that. To tell you the truth I find it way too confusing to try and keep up. I just don't have the interest to change everything every time something is renamed. In the future it might be different but for now I'm fine with the name on the tag. Although I do like to know if a cross I have is registered or not. Thank you for looking it up. I do appreciate you taking the time to look for me. No hard feelings.
