Andy's Orchids here in southern california grows them quite successfully and has them on hand. He grows them mounted and waters them often. The temps and humidity are the same between here and Santa Barbara and so can be grown in a wide range of climates. They grow in mexico where it is hot during the summer. RH probably around 50-70%. It is wort a try. I loved them when I grew them in San Diego but for some reason up here I can't keep them going. The fragrance is intoxicating.

In my experience summer heat and humidity's not a great problem to overcome; however, the winter cool (or even cold) and dry rest period is essential to keeping this species happy. While I don't have to contend with South Florida's summers, it does get up to the mid to high 90s here, with 90% humidity regularly during the summer. As long as I water the plant a lot and keep it in bright shade, it does fine.

Good to know about summer temp and humidity tolerance, Steve, especially as I'm about to move to a much hotter and more humid area... I've kept mine cool to cold in the winter but not necessarily dry. This winter it kept sending out new little flushes of roots so I'd water every few days when it did that. It's mounted with minimal moss and always in areas with good air movement so it dries out fast, though.
Intoxicating is a great description of the fragrance, James, I've been visiting it multiple times a day recently just to stand around and smell it for a while. I first sought this plant years ago because Roman Kaiser calls it one of his favorite orchid fragrances in The Scent of Orchids, and I have not been disappointed.
