Hi ,I am new to orchids . Attended recent Redland Orchid festival in Homestead,Florida and bought a bareroot (not in pot) plant from a stall(Kao Dennis at Ching Hua Orchids) . Not knowing much about this variety, I realized later that the bulbs were somewhat shriveled and roots were not very good.So I trimmed off bad roots and potted it up on top of orchid mix that I use for Cattleya. Now waiting for it to regrow roots and plump up.I realize it may take 6 months or more or never.
Looking for help in growing this one.Sorry, long post.

Questions-
1.I can not find much information about this cross. I would like to know what does word 'sib' mean in this plants name.
2. Does anyone know if it is really fragrant . Vendor said it is.His display plant in bloom was very fragrant.
3. Need growing info-media,light,water,temps and winter care.
Thanks.

Sib means sibling. Your plant is Encyclia randii x sibling. So someone crossed two Encyclia randii plants that happened to be sibling plants and produced your plant. Your plant is the species Encyclia randii. Here is a link that has info about your plant. To find more info just google Encyclia randii. Since it is a species you should find a lot of info on its care.

Thanks Wynn Dee. How would I know the name of that sibling ?Is it like self pollination?Does it matter in terms of growing this plant?
I ask this because in many places when I search just for 'randii' ,there is no fragrance mentioned. Flower does look like what I saw on the display plant. Of course mine is no where close to blooming yet.

The sibling was another Encyclia randii plant. They crossed two Encyclia randii plants that came from the same seed pod or parents. So instead of printing on the tag Encyclia randii x Encyclia randii they print Encyclia randii x sib. As far as I know this species is fragrant, so yes yours will be too. Your plant is a species not a hybrid.

If your plant was self pollinated the tag would say Encyclia randii x self. Yours is x sib. Think of sibling like human siblings. They crossed two sibling Encyclia randii plants to produce your plant which is Encyclia randii x sib. No, it won't make a difference in growing your plant.

Your welcome! I'm glad you understand now! It can be confusing and hard to explain! I think your plant will grow well in Florida. Keep us posted on how it does. Post pics when it blooms!

Just Species !(updated on May 28, 2012)

Here is a link to Cloud's Orchids in Canada. They are great orchid growers. Scroll down to Encyclia randii and they say it is deliciously fragrant!

I also purchased this plant recently from a local orchid show in March. It was in a similar condition to the one you describe. I placed mine in a clay pot with New Zealand sphagnum moss as the potting medium I seems to be perking up slowly.
