Just got this one from Lowe's yesterday. It was a Better Grow Bulbs bagged orchid... got it on clearance since the pseudobulbs were shriveled. I'm thinking it will perk up over the summer. I soaked the roots for a few minutes, removed most of the media, and crammed it into this little 4 inch basket with some charcoal and chc on the bottom. And then this morning I gave it a good soak with a dilution of superthrive/seaweed. It's difficult to see in the pictures, but there are new roots coming from most of the pseudobulbs. I can't wait to smell the blooms!
Encyclias work so well in the South Florida environment. I've had my eye on Encyclia phoenicea also but I haven't picked one up yet. Good luck with yours.
you have a nice plant there...and Lowe's dehydrated it in the shelves as per looking at the shrivelled pbulb...on the bright side, a new bulb has sprouted and there are new roots forming...you did well mounting it in a basket...
You found that at Lowe's?! If only our local Lowe's would stock this species... You'll really like the scent, which, to my nose, is much superior to the vaunted Onc. Sharry Baby's fragrance. Just don't overwater it. The only time I've had problems with my Enc. phoenicea is when I've treated it to monsoon-like conditions in the past. Maybe it's just my particular growing environment, but this species does a lot better for me when it's grown on the dry side (like Rhyncholaelia digbyana, but with maybe a bit less light). Good luck with your new acquisition.
