Just Mounted Rescued (not from Lowe's) E. tampensis Male
Default Just Mounted Rescued (not from Lowe's) E. tampensis

So I found this Encyclia tampensis on a fallen bald cypress branch in a pharmacy parking lot a month or so ago. I've kept it a bit shaded and have been giving it regular doses of seaweed and superthrive and a bit of fert, trying to give it a boost before removing it/them from the branch. After seeing some signs of root growth, the decision was made, today is the day. So I took a large pocket knife and basically cut the bark off beneath the plant and roots, rather than just pulling the plant off the branch which would have inevitably torn a ton of roots. After getting the plants off the branch it still had all of the bark attached, so I carefully peeled the bark from behind the roots one little piece at a time. What you have to remember is when an orchid is growing on a large relatively smooth branch in the wild, its roots have no limitations, so they just keep going up the branch or down the branch in essentially one direction. In short, it was quite tedious cutting the bark from the branch without cutting too many roots, and then separating the roots from between slivers of bark. And because most of the roots were quite long, I folded them under before placing the plants on the treefern. After wiring the plants to the treefern, I just added some sphag over the exposed roots and wrapped it up with fishing line. Here tis:
