New Fred Clarke MiniCatt Cross
Fred Clarke did a presentation for our Society last month on his breeding line of minicatts. While talking to him, he picked up a plant and said to me: "You have to buy this plant." When the hybridizer tells you to buy something specific you do as you are told. I am sooooooooo glad that I listened to Fred. The cross is Blc Love Sound 'Dogashima'AM/AOS X Slc Final Touch 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS. It must have opened yesterday because it is fully open today. It is just absolutely stunning in real life. The photo really does not do it justice. This is a first bloom seedling that is 6 inches tall and will not get any bigger and has put out 3 almost 4 inch flowers, what more could one person want?

How can you argue with a man that comes up with something like Fredclarkeara After Dark?
I'm kind of sad I wasn't paying attention to the SVO price list that came around from the society for an import. I just saw loads of Catts (which I don't particularly like) and decided against it. Drat!
However, this is a pretty great plant - well flowered. Nice to see a minicatt in something other than red, too. It probably depends on the hybridiser though, some may just want to shift junk

Discus - You do see alot of red but there is a reason for that. There are very few small flowered species that have all of the traits that alot of the mini-catt breeders are looking for. Sophronitis coccinea has it all, rich saturated color, big flower and it's very flat so they use it for the 1st generation and go on from there.

I sent a photo of the flower to Fred Clarke, this was his response: "Beautiful I like the darker yellow on the lateral sepals and the flower is really flat it's as nice as the ones I kept for myself. Nice job blooming it"

I feel your pain. Although I am learning the new genera names, in my own collection I refuse to use them. What's the old adage, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Actually the old names serve us as growers better, especially in the Cattleya Alliance but the taxonomists are not growers, they are scientists who don't give a flying fig about what we think.
