It does look similar to mine. Is this a first bloom? In your experience do they fix themselves? Wow, another year! Please let me know if the bloom gets better.

Not to disappoint you but I have one that has quite re-curved petals and it is not a first bloom. I got it from a friend as a division of her plant and it was in spike at the time. So I am hoping different cultural practices will produce a flatter bloom. But she blooms other catts just fine so it may just be the way this one is. But having said that, first blooms are definitely not always as good as future blooms. so good luck with yours.

Are you saying you have a plant that is the same as mine or a different plant that has the same type of bloom? Or are you saying that some plants are just like this and every year the blooms are like this? And if so is there a way to know which ones are like that?

Yes, this is the first bloom for this plant.
Yes, sometimes first blooms are a little wonky and the next bloom is fine.
Sometimes the plant always throws wonky blooms. Outwardly I do not believe there are any indications of which pants will bloom perfect flowers. It just takes time, patience and good culture.

Thanks for giving me the info. I have never had this problem with any of my other plants! Is this a problem that can run into with all orchids or is it just Cats?

My plant is a cattleya but a different hybrid than yours. I am saying that possibly it can bloom like this every year . However all the pics in OrchidWiz of my plant have flat petals and mine doesn't. So now I plan to wait and see if growing it in a new environment changes the shape at all. Unless you see multiple pictures of the same hybrid with curved petals always, I don't know how you would know you are getting one like that. Don't get too worried yet. A first bloom is not a true indication of how it will end up in future blooms. The fact that you got it to bloom is something to be proud of.

As you can see by the various responses, there are a number of reasons why an isolated flower might be deformed or otherwise inferior, especially in a first blooming or if the plant is blooming with a low level of stored energy. And it is not unheard of for a strong, well-nourished, and healthy plant that usually produces good flowers to put out a bad one for no identifiable cause.
But another reality is that seedlings, whether they be species or hybrids, are all subject to genetic variation. Some, unfortunately, will display undesirable traits. They might be poor growers or susceptible to ailments, etc. While some will have better flowers than others from the same cross, some might have flowers that are peloric, or irregular, in one way or another.
That might be the case here. There's no way to know for sure how the next flowers of this plant will turn out until it blooms again, but chances are that they will be no better.
