I concur with your sentiments regarding lumping into Sophronitis. The DNA sequence doesn't tell the entire story especially since the segments were just a small fraction of the entire gene. The fact that there was such a rush to make the changes based simply on DNA seems a stretch to say the least. Used properly, DNA is a tool for tradtional taxonomy and helps explain relationships. I would not use it to terrorize the entire genus. The RHS has jumped the gun on this situation, with many more changes to follow.
We have all understood for some time now that there are natural groupings of plants within Laelia, and the ones that you mention make a lot of sense.
It's nice to see similar opinions in different parts of the world regarding the changes, we are not isolated in our views.
For myself, the plant tags remain the same and I'm a rock in the river letting the changes wash over me until they settle to a logical conclusion. When, and if that ever happens is something our children will still be asking!
