Gwen, what you see is a thin layer of shredded-rock (similar to ballast) on top of the medium. The medium itself is a mix - 50% coconut fiber, 30% shredded pinecone, 20% charcoal nuggets. I use mainly this and some variations on it as general growing medium.

No Photoshop or similar expensive software is needed to this task, Gwen. To add specs Microsoft Paint is enough and that's what I use.
