Schomburgkia Tibicinis

I am so exctied. This past weekend I finally dove in and bought a schomburgkia tibicinis. I have been wanting one of these plants for a while now because of its uniqueness. I did some research and found out that the bulbs are hollow so that ants in the wild can live in them. I also found out that the spikes on the plants can be up to 15' in length. Anyways, here are some pictures of the latest addition to my collection.

Your plant looks nice and healthy. In my experience, these guys are slow growers, light hogs and don't require a lot of water.

I agree with 2 out of 3 of these! These are definitely light lovers (ie. I grew them in near full sun in Hawaii) and they do like to dry out between waterings. However, I found these guys to be relatively quick growing, especially from a plant your size. I bet you get 2 new growths this spring (or earlier, considering the roots are very short, therefore I bet the plant was chopped up) and maybe another by the end of next summer. The spike are VERY long and bumble bees love to pollinate them, so watch out!!

I agree with the comment above, but I would put it in a pot twice that size, they love to grow if given the right amount of light, I have mine on a native tree in the front yard and it is going ferral.

I saw one flowering earlier this spring... I hope you have LOTS of head room!!!!!!!!!!! (it had AT LEAST a 10' spike!)

Looks nice. I have a division and it can take full sun on my roof. I noticed that the roots are kind of short growing and shallow. I wondering if you may need chunckier media to have it anchor to it. I put it in a net pot with lava rock and hydroton. I got a Laelia superbiens a couple of months earlier and it sent out long deep roots so it is more anchored. I really like the S. tibicinis. mine has 2 new growths.

I am wondering what are teh minimum temps. Read somewhere that likes to be always warm, and I read elsewhere that it can take some chill and some people grow it intermediate...
