agree with the above - looks like Cattleya (formerly Laelia) purpurata to me too

and it's gorgeous!

Its all depend on the clone and where they are breeded. My two L. pup v carnea are totally different looking. One is more compact, very short rhizome, with big fat spindle looking cane while the other carnea looks more like your plant. Much taller thinner cane and rhizome like to spreak out about two inch.
Maybe you can give it higher light to keep it more compact, but you can only do so much on the plant genetic. Also some robust clone tend to send out two growths a year. My plant produce two growht a year, but the one produced in spring didn't mature enought in time to produce bloom. Only the one from fall/winter get matured to flower by summer. All depends on where u live.

Thank you, Wonderlen. Yes, this one (although a ratty looking plant) is very robust and puts out a couple of growths per year. I may try to mount it, since it would probably do quite well on a manzanita branch (at least that would give its spindly growths more space to spread out, and if it grows somewhat pendently that might make it a bit more appealing).
