Apparently it can also be Octopodes, just to add further confusion

It comes from the Greek, and Octopodes is the greek plural of it. Many people over the years have assumed it was latin so used Octopi because that is an assumed latin pluralisation (although latin rules are more complicated that that).

I think most people in general use use Octopusses, I do.
