Blc. Copper Queen (Bl. Richard Mueller X Blc. Toshie Aoki)
Yes, I know, the name is probably not current. It's what's on my tag, I plead guilty of staying with synonyms. The pix is from this July.

Beautiful thing. I'm sticking with the names on the tags too. Who knows how many times they will change before all the dust settles.

Merlyn, I am curious how much light your plant gets. Or anyone else who grows this one. My seedling, which has about 3 good sized leaves and 2 smaller ones is under a 4 ft fluorescent fixture that has two T12 bulbs in the middle and two T5 bulbs-one each mounted on the outer sides of the metal hood to replace the other two T12's that would normally be in the fixture. It's about 8 inches above the plant. The newest mature leaf sure has a lot of purple blotching on it as if it is getting a lot of light. The other leaves are mostly green and none of my other catts do this under this fixture. I keep wondering if I am giving it too much light. The leaves are light green not yellow.

I put it outside for the summer in tree filtered sunlight. In the winter it's under 6 - 4 foot T8s in a SE window but not up near the lights, close to the window. The light green sounds like the right amount of light, don't know about purple areas. Feel the leaves and if they are warm to your touch it's too much. Haven't tried T5s but am about to get a 6 bulb fixture. I've heard that you CAN burn plants under them ! Figures because the wattage is almost twice T8s ! Be careful !

I think it is because the new leaves are just that, new, so they are more tender and purple easier.

Well, maybe it's getting too much then. I'll see if moving it makes a difference. It is centered to be more under the old T12 bulbs and nothing else has reacted this way so it seems strange. Otherwise it seems to be a healthy robust plant. Thanks.

Merlyn, Fortunately, this Forum doesn't have taxonomic nut cases who demand that you keep current with the latest name changes. Nice fotos. Thanks for sharing!

Silken, Purplish "spots" are a result of pigmentation in orchids. It is quite common in some species and is a desirable result of adequate light. Some species and some varieties will not "spot" so don't get excited if your plant doesn't do it. Normally, I rejoice when I see signs of pigment in my orchid leaves and flowers!
