I'm a little confused by the second coerulea. I have one similar that has pearlescence in the sepals and petals. Is this what makes it a coerulea?

No, Got Ants, in the Cattleya Alliance caerulea (or the so called 'blue' Cattleyas) is the flower in which the normal pigment lavender changes into a more violetish one. People generally call 'caerulea', or 'coerulea', this modified pigmentation, but it definitely it is not caerulea (true blue), I mean, we all know that violet is violet, violet is not true blue :):)!, but... that's the way things are in our hobby! The tricky thing is that what most likely causes the lavender color change into a violetish coloration is the pH inside the cells: the more it is basic, the more the flower is violetish. So, you have caeruleas ranging from the almost lavender (cell pH mildly basic) to the very dark, solid violet lips seen in some Cattleya species :):). That's why the two caeruleas in the photos seem a little different from one another. :)
