I love the plant and the close up does look like a purpurata to me. Certainly it looks like the lip of many carneas that I've seen.

You know I never really questioned it's identity until comments here on the Board, but taking a good hard look at the lip, it seems to elongated. I guess I could bring it to one of the AOS plant ID experts just to satisfy my curiosity not that it would change anything. The plant is to darn big to do anything with except sit back and enjoy it whatever it is.

It is big but I have seen bigger. What really amazes me is that it is a very tight compact ball. It would be differcult to get more than a 2-3 bulb division without putting in some effort. Plus the fact that it is self sustaining, there is no media outside of the 5" pot buried in the middle somewhere and there is no rot. Go figure.

thats the cool part! that its established itself enough that you dont have to do anything!
ive seen those tacky looks "ball o' phal" they do at some orchid shows, but this is way cooler!
