Talking Rl. Digbyana

I am so happy. My package arrived today from a friend in Texas. I bought another Rhyncholaelia digbyana division with three growths on Monday and it arrived today. This is my third. Since it was a division it was shipped bare root. There was only one problem, the plant had grown over and down the pot causing the plant to grow upwards, but the roots grew horizontally and attached themselves to the pot. Potting this baby up was a challenge because there weren't many roots that I could put into the media and I had to stake the plant in order for it to stay upright in the pot. I staked all three of the growths because I thought that it would establish itself faster that way. The newest growth (furthest left) even had some roots that had just started growing within the past couple of weeks. Hopefully they will grow into the pot and make the plant more stable. Anyways, I am so happy with my new dibyana. I can't wait for it to bloom. Here are somepictures of my new beauty.

These are most of the roots, however, the new, good roots are in the media.

All three growths staked.

Sometimes it takes a bit of work!

These are really easy growers, tough as nails. So I bet yours will take off soon. Today I found three digbyanas blooming in my greenhouse, always a treat.

It was difficult trying to figure out how to pot it, but once I got an idea I went with it. I forgot to mention in the original post that this particular plant is from the jungles of Brazil.

I think it's great you're collecting digbyana. They have so many great qualities. I have just one I bought in 2006. It's a massive plant rooted to a cork slab and tied to the bottom of a wooden basket that's hung upright. The interior of the basket is stuffed with more cork so the roots have plenty of space as time goes on. It only blooms once a year for me but wow! what a show.

If you don't mind a suggestion, I think your new one is potted too low. Digbys throw growths that want to move downward as the rhizome lengthens, not upward and out. In a season you'll see what I mean and may need to do an emergency repot. I'd pot the plant much higher so the center of the crown is almost level to the top of the pot.

Thanks Mokeck. I was thinking the same thing. I noticed it even more when you mentioned it, so I fixed the problem. I put some bark underneath each pseudobulb to raise it out of the media. It looks a whole lot better now. I just hope that it did not disrupt any growth that has occured since I potted it last Thursday. Thanks again

Default digbyana picture

Not a very good picture, I'm afraid. But you asked for it. I do have several baskets of this that I'd like to find homes for. Not horribly expensive. PM me.
