Cheryl, do you mean you want to name the flower mentioned after you mother-in-law? Please explain further.

My mother-in-law was very much into orchids, admitted many times that orchids were not for me. When my mother-in-law passed away she was raising along with others, her favorite Blc. Norman’s Bay ‘Low’. My mother-in-law was a wonderful cook and in her honor my husband and I put together a cookbook, taking 5 years and on the front of this cookbook was her favorite orchid Blc. Norman’s Bay ‘Low’.
This is an old hybrid going back to the 1950’s with fine descendents. A vendor down south has been looking for one for me, with no luck 8 months later. I keep looking and if this hybrid comes to me unregistered or the likes of yours Steven, I will be blessed. To date I am unable to find a lot of information on this orchid.
Keeping fingers crossed that I find one at the WOC.

The orchid Blc. Norman's Bay is already registered. That is how it got the name "Norman's Bay." Go to this link
Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register
and you will see the two plants that were crossed to make it and all the other registration information. You cannot reregister a cross that has already been made not even if the original cross maker gives you permission.
Now, the one thing you COULD do is find a plant that does not have a cultivar name ( the 'Low' in the name above ) and give it the cultivar name of your mother-in-law. But then it would not be Blc. Norman’s Bay ‘Low’.
Is that clear enough?
What happened with my plant is that it was a cross that was not registered yet. I contacted the cross maker BEFORE he registered it and got permission to do it.

RHS was not so kind to me in the past...put the name in many different ways, nothing popped up but I figured it was, per a vendor friend, but never documented...so the proof is in the thread .
No matter how it comes, it will be in her honor. I do appreciate this information and well noted.

Initially I could not find it as "Norman's Bay" as an exact match so I put in norman and deselected exact match. I have had to do this before. It seems the ' character messes with their search function.
Anyway, glad I was able to help.

Its a beauty! Sorry to hear about your mother, and I imagine it must be a great comfort to know her name will always be remembered now

I was cleaning up this plant recently and I found what I believe to be 8 to 10 new growth buds. At least three of them are growing!!!
Woo Hoo.
