Default C violacea - Awards & AQ

Lots of C. violaceas are blooming now. They bloom now, in summer & sometimes in the fall, depending on how often they initiate new canes.

The first photo shows a cluster of assorted colors from one cross. About half of the plants were blooming at that time. The rest opened a few days later, but there were too many to photograph meaningfully in a group.

The other photos show closeups of individual flowers. We sent in a group of plants & received 2 AM/AOS awards & an AQ (award of quality) for the cross. My friend in Japan made the cross & was credited as the hybridizer. We grew the plants from flasks, bloomed them & received credit as the growers.

How long did it take from flask to bloom? They seem to be hard to find here in canada.

Silken.
They went into 5" pots in July 09. The first batch bloomed late April 2010, more in June & July 2010. Some of the current blooms are 3rd blooms, others are first blooms.

About 6 months in cp, over 1 year in 2-1/4" pots & over 1 year in 5". So, probably about 3 to 3-1/2 years from flask. I've made follow up crosses, to improve the flower colors, patterns & shapes. Now that I see the likely results, I'll push those along even faster.

In Saskatchewan, you would probably need to add about 2-1/2 to 3 years from flask. (I visited Saskatoon years ago & it's pretty cold there).

Great job of growing. Congratulations on the awards. Are any of the awarded plants in the photos you posted?
