Anacheilium cochleatum
After a break of a few months, due to some inhospitable conditions, this little guy has decided to grace me with two spikes. For a few years it only produced one spike at time because it was making only 1 new growth at a time. But now it has decided to put out 4 simultaneous growths, and three spikes. Only two are in bloom now.
Most orchids are resupinate, meaning the flower buds rotate 180 degrees before blooming. Not these which is why their lip is on top.
PS it has a very nice fragrance. I recommend this for everyone.
I have exposed this to long periods of draught, harsh chemicals (from painting the room it was growing in and pesticides), it has survived mealies and scale, and I can leave it in standing water for days at a time. It is growing is strong Catt light now, but very low humidity. It has also survived 1 month of total darkness and 1 month of very very low light levels on top of the dark month. Very very easy orchid.

Is this the same as Encyclia cochleata and Prosthechea cochleata? This is one I can never work out the current name for.

My hubby always calls this one the Squid Orchid (assuming I'm right about it's other names). Mine is doing well in S/H. No new flowers/spikes yet but it had no roots when I put it in S/H and it now has masses along with a mature new growth and another growth just starting. |

This is the easiest orchid that there ever could be, in my opinion! Mine puts out multiple growths each fall, and flowers from may to late november. And, it can tolerate ALOT of mistreatment!

I have not noticed any trends about when my plant puts on new growths and when it flowers. To me it seems like it does all of those things year round.

In Florida we have sub-species, ver triandra. I have a small one purchased from Ruebens Orchids. I bought it in seed (sponateous) and has yet to reflower for me, hopefully soon.
I also have the Prosthechea "Green Hornet" and it is huge. I missed a bloom due to repotting, but in spike now. I recommend if you have a choice of the species cochleata, or the hybrid Green Hornet, get the latter. You won't regret it.
