'Equilab'
I would like to know if a comprehensive list of orchids with cultivar names from Equilab exists. I have three different plants, a Laelia lobata, Cattleya amethystoglossa caerulea and everyone's favorite hybrid - Lc Sheila Lauterbach.
A little history below, as provided by Rosim in BR and Anglo - thanks to both!!
Manarini collected fine and rare species cultivars, and was a pioneer in orchid mericloning. He was also a breeder and hybridizer (not to mention an awarded photographer). There are a number of orchids named after the nursery or after Manarini himself.
Ademar Manarini was a businessman here in Brazil. He run a business in the field of fishing equipment called Equipesca. He was also and orchid lover and skilled photographer. At a certain point in 1970 he decided to found a nursery equipped with a laboratory to reproduce good and rare clones of orchids that until then were confined to a few orchid collectors only and started acquiring everything (in the Cattleya alliance mainly) of good quality he could get his hands on. He meristemed many good things, selfed many others and also produced hybrids. His nursery was named Equilab and was very respected for the quality plants sold. Unfortunately, when he died in 1989 the orchid business didn’t go ahead. So, when you see the clonal name ‘Equilab’ following a plant name it is a good indication of quality.
