Epidendrum ciliare, carpophorum & parkinsonianum

Epi ciliare has a very large distribution in the nature. Plants vary a little whether they are from far north (Mexico) or south (Brazil). The stem can hold up to a dozen large flowers if the plant is really well adapted.



The next Epi is native to the amazon region and belongs to the Epi nocturnum complex.



Epi parkinsonianum is a well-known hanging species.

Hello. How fortuitous you posted because I just bought the parkinsonianum and am eyeing the ciliare. Any cultural tips? Light/fertilizer?

Sometimes those coincidences happen, isn't it?
I grow the parkinsonianum mounted on an (now) old xaxim slab I keep vertically hanging. Several roots have penetrated the xaxim fiber, but several others are free in the air. This way I can water the plant every other day (two times/week in the winter) without any kind of rot risk. I use chemical fertilizer twice a month, always twenty minutes/half an hour before watering. One of my plants is kept under very bright light, more or less the same amout I give to walkerianas and the other plant is in a shadier position (good for Phals, Paphs) and both are doing equally good!

I'm sorry, I'm not understanding about the light levels? The parkinsonianum or the ciliare take bright light, or both??? (i'm confused! )


On a side note, do you think orchids benefit from the addition of tree fern fiber in the medium? I noticed this weekend at RF orchids that they mix tree fern fiber with hydroton. Is this worth doing?

Sorry, my fault! I didn't mention I have two plants of parkinsonianum... one in bright light and one in a shaddier place (I was not talking about the ciliare).
As for the xaxim fiber, yes, you bet orchids will benefit from it. Few things are as good for orchids as xaxim fiber. The thing is that xaxim extraction is prohibited...(at least here in Brazil!)
