Initially described by Robert Allen Rolfe (1889) as being Laelia grandis Var. tenebrosa, in 1893 he must admitting that it was in fact a new variety considering which it did not have the petals twisted like Laelia grandis and that the distribution area in Brazil was different. One meets Laelia tenebrosa in the north of Rio de Janeiro in the state of Esperito Santo where it grows on the large trees of the relatively dense forests. It is a plant with has a very vigorous growing , on the plant which I have I can already see the new growth which currently measures 1" and which prepare the 2008 flowering.
