That stuff is perfectly normal. It's called extrafloral nectar. It comes from nectaries in new growths, flower buds, where the stem meets an open flower at the back, and at the ends of developing seed capsules.
Its purpose is to attract predators such as wasps, lizards, and stinging or biting ants. The presence of these creatures then offers protection from little herbivores.
If you get a drop of it on your finger and taste it, you'll find that it is very sweet.
