Yellow 'Why Not'
This is a very rare yellow variety of Ctna. Why Not. It may be the only yellow variety of Ctna. Why Not in existence. The rest is crimson or red. I obtained this plant from Orchid Center. It is a cutting from the mother plant which has received awards from the American Orchid Society and Honolulu Orchid Society. My plant is currently in a 3-inch clay pot grown in New Zealand Sphagnum moss.

I mistakenly placed this in the wrong Orchid Alliance. Will one of the Orchid Board moderators please move this thread to the Cattleya alliance. Thank you.

Though I love minicatts and most of the Ctnas, I have never cared for Why Not. This one, however, I DO like (quite a bit actually). I've never seen this form before.
What does its clonal name mean?

"Makana Ke Akua" is Hawaiian for "Gift of God".

This plant has a very interesting history. According to the owner, he purchased Ctna. Why Not 'Super Nova' many years ago from a well known nursery in California. 'Super Nova' was brilliant red with yellow in the throat. The 'Super Nova' was cloned in Hawaii and from the thousands of clones a few plants with the largest, best shaped flowers were selected for breeding. All of the flowers were red. He believes the select plants were tetraploids. These select plants were selfed and sib-crossed and thousands of plants were germinated and cultivated. Most were sold with spikes and sent all over the country. A few plants were held back and bloomed at the nursery. By chance, one of the plants that was held back bloomed yellow. He said it was God's gift.
