Anacheilium fragrans

(Feel free to call it Prosthechea, or Encyclia, or Epidendrum....)
A small and easy to grow orchid, distributed by almost all the Neotropics, from Mexico down south to Brazil; the non-resupinate flowers have a sweet and intense perfume, that sometimes remember honey, and sometimes it is so strong that is nauseanting!

These always remind me of Sugarplum Fairies. Suppose with that kind of name, it certainly lives up to it!

I tend to think of these as Encyclia because it's so like cochleata and that's how my Encyclia cochleata was labeled when I first bought it and I've never changed it.

Yea, the name thing is crazy! But I like Encyclia now better because of the similarities with these and other Encyclias concerning the position of the lips (non resupinate).

Wnderful flowers. And, my prefereance is to call them Prosthecheas. My reasoning? Encyclias have rounder bulbs, Oncidiums have flatter bulbs, and in between is the prosthecheas. Now look at the similarities between fragrans, cochleata, and others.

I personally believe some do not belong in this list like Encyclia (Prosthechea) boothiana. First, the flat psuedobulb, and secondly, the flower shape. This one may be a true Anacheilium, of an Oncidium, but to me, not a Prosthechea.

In my opinion you should be very careful when using the shape of a plant to place it taxonomically. Prosthecheas are very closely related to Epidendrums and Encyclias but only distantly related to the Oncidniae.

Frdemetr, thanks for posting! I have never actually seen this plant in person so im trying to imagine the perfume.
