Cattleya walkeriana var. perola ‘Equilab’
This is one of three walkerianas named ‘Equilab.’ The other two are an alba and a concolor. Equilab was an orchid nursery in Brazil founded in 1970 by Ademar Manarini (1920 - 1989). He had also established a company called Equipesca that manufactures fishing equipment. Equipesca is still in business, but the orchid nursery closed a few years after Manarini’s death.
Manarini collected fine and rare species cultivars, and was a pioneer in orchid mericloning. He was also a breeder and hybridizer (not to mention an awarded photographer). There are a number of orchids named after the nursery or after Manarini himself.
The perola (pearl) color form has rose blushes on white petals and sepals or on the petals only. It’s the same as the suave color form except that the central lobe of a perola’s labellum is fully pigmented.
