Ok, so for sure it is a spike and is presently approx. 2 feet long and growing at a rate of I swear an inch a day!!! Not sure how much longer it plans to grow, but I have a question. The plant is on the top shelf directly under my "traveling" light (I think it's high pressure sodium 400) and the spike is now only about 1 foot from touching the light. Do I leave as is ...or do I move the plant down 1 shelf level, thus reducing light a little bit? I have posted some pics which show the spike and the buds. Thanks in advance for your thoughts/suggestions.

I think you should lower the plant, but make sure it is in the EXACT orientation to the light as it is now, otherwise the spike and buds could twist, thus making it look less than pleasant.

If it is one foot away from harm, I would wait another 6 inches and then follow Cody's advice.
