Got a divison of BLC star ruby 'xanadu' in june that was already in hydrotron but new roots were just starting so I have been keeping it very wet by daily watering and misting ....she got dumped out of the pot by wind a couple of weeks ago .I was lucky and noticed within just a few minutes and repotted but lol I did get a look at the roots and they were not to bad at that time but still pretty short.
Since that time I decided to place the reg pot in a plastic butter tub and go a little bit more towards s/h and let the water from spraying collect untill it got up a inch or so before I dumped it each day or two.Today I got several more of my favorite containers "plastic folgers coffee containers" and made the holes for s/h pots in them and decided it was time to move her over to full s/h.
She has lots wonderfull roots 6 or 7 inches long that look adapted to very well to the wet conditions I had gradually went to and she is now good for a year or so.
She has one sheath on each new growth already and now should do great will post updates in a week or so on how well she made the move.
I realy like to move to s/h in stages this way by going from bark to hydrotron and then keep it wetter by watering a little more and usually water by spraying not drenching. Then as new roots emerge set the pot in a tub I can just lift the pot out of and dump excess and gradually raise the water level so old roots dont just die quickly but seem to die off slower as new roots grow in adapted to the wetter conditions.
