Hoanglong.
Very nice blooms.
Just some background about this hybrid. Blc Love Sound (Blc. Bouton D'Or x Laelia briegeri) was originally made & registered by Dogashima Orchids in Japan. The hybridizer's intent was to make a number of hybrids which had, not just nice flowers, but a pleasing plant form, good flower presentation & a good proportion between plant size & flower size.
L. briegeri is a mini species with very stiff upright leaves & very small yellow flowers on a tall inflorescence. Blc Bouton D'Or is a full shaped 12-14 cm yellow-orange on a compact sized plant. The intent of this cross was to create nice round yellows or yellow-oranges with upright spikes on mini or near-mini plants. The hybridizer's extensive use of L briegeri produced many very nice mini cats. The only drawback to a number of them was that, because of L briegeri as a first generation parent, the hybrids tended to be relatively slow growing.
We also discovered this, over 15 years ago, when we produced a series of test crosses using L briegeri as a parent. As a result, we began producing a number of hybrids using Lc Tokyo Magic in place of L briegeri. While the resultant hybrids were not the miniatures produced using L briegeri, they were very compact & much easier to grow & bloom. Overall, Lc Tokyo Magic has proven to be a very good breeding parent that produces hybrids with clean compact upright growth, strong upright spikes & good growing & blooming vigor.
Don't know where hoanglong's plant came from, however, we made the same cross in Aug, 2000 & it has performed very well in our warm or intermediate conditions elsewhere. Other Lc Tokyo Magic hybrids have also performed well.
