C. Aloha Apricot ‘Waunakee’

I am soooo excited!

I officially ordered my first orchid online today.

Greg from Oak Hill is bringing a C. Aloha Apricot ‘Waunakee’ (formerly Slc) for me to Denver Orchid Society's show in October.

Ever since I found out that they would be coming to the show, I've been emailing back and forth with Greg about what orchids he carries would do well in my conditions.
Surprisingly, he first directed me to the Red/Orange Cattleya Meristems. Is it typical for those colors to be more durable, or just coincidence?

In any case, the Aloha Apricot is one I've had my eye on for months now, so I'm pleased that it was his first recommendation.

AND! He was able to tell me the parentage!
"The Aloha Apricot parentage is 1/4 of each of the following species:

Catt. intermedia
Catt luteola
Sophronitis coccinea (now a Cattleya!)
Laelia cinnabarina (also now a Cattleya)"

Would that make it an almost-primary-hybrid, since it comes from primary crosses? Now that I think about it...maybe not...but anyways...

Overall, I'm very impressed with the service and knowledge he could provide. AND CANNOT WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER! Maybe it was a bad decision to order so early, the wait might do serious damage to my brain.


Besides this, my only other hope is that another vendor brings a healthy C. walkeriana.

OMG! How are you going to hold it together until OCTOBER?! I think I would go insane, I'm very impatient.

I visited Oak Hill's booth at Redlands and was very happy that I did. I bought 2 different Stanhopeas (compots) for only $5 each! And each had about 15-20 plantlets!

I haven't ordered any plants online yet.......I'm afraid to cross that line. Once I do, there's no turning back.

That cross sounds beautiful!! Do you know if it will have a scent?

I asked if it inherited a fragrance from intermedia or luteola, and Greg said they had not detected one on those that had bloomed.
So I kind of broke my 'only buy fragrant orchids' rule. But who cares! It meets all my other requirements!

Stanhopeas! So those would be seedlings then? I'm not brave enough to do anything that young- however, the surprise seedling that came with my C. intermedia is putting out a new lead and roots....

I just checked out the picture, that is a beautiful flower! And I see they left the fragrance slot open - maybe you will be lucky and get a fragrance with yours! I will keep my fingers crossed!

That's a very beautiful tropicolor catt. I didn't know Soph. coccinea is not considered a cattleya.

I too am interested in why they were switched to Cattleya- as in, what the requirements are.

C. intermedia is a great orchid with respect to imparting great tolerance on its progeny. intermedia can take really low or hot temperatures, and its roots are really aggressive and more immune to root rot than most other Catts.

So with intermedia's offsprings, you get a temperature tolerant plant that is also resistant to root rot and stale media. However, intermedia is gigantic.
