I've never seen Cattleyas in our Lowes in CO, let alone anything besides a noid low-grade phal. So unfair!

At our last OS meeting someone presented a wonderful Catt that they later revealed came from one of the polyethylene wrapped Lowes offers. Everyone was shocked and amazed that this once lowly half dehydrated plant could flourish. I think it's Costa Farms that mainstreams it's plants to the boxes.
Despite the marketing mania and neglect they flourish... seems Orchids have chosen Humans as a Means of Propagation.

You should read The Botany of Desire: A Plants-eye View of the World by Michael Pollan.

Addresses that exact principle.

I think your right about this. Plants do things In response to the results they get and we are one of the biggest factors that affect their survival now in so many ways Including breeding and keeping them for asethetic reasons,So it actually stands to reason in my mind that they would start responding to us by making us want them around .....Insects are not the only ones that appreciate a certain scent or color and form of of bloom.

I know I would be killing out a nasty smelling plant in my yard pretty quick unless it had a truly astoumding bloom and I have kept a few of those at times.

The Botany of Desire is a great book and I'd say that even without my botany background. Should be recommended reading for all orchidophiles.

Glad to find another lover. One of my favorite books, hands down. So fascinating! And I love Pollan's writing style.

Great picture John!
