C. luteola and any hybrids therefrom. Any hybrid of Broughtonia sanguinea will be a compact plant but have rather tall spikes. The rupiculous laelias (briegeri, milleri, etc), Cattleya walkeriana and hybrids of Sophrinitis coccinea and wittigiana, etc (if you can provide a coolish environment).
Pot. Hoku Gem has been with me for over a decade ... and has put up with all sorts of abuse and different conditions. There are a number of rather durable minicatts.
You don't need alot of experience growing them. Minimal is good enough. They're pretty standard growing. Shouldn't be kept too cool. Can take it pretty warm, but intermediate is best.
L. alaorii grows in partial sun. Don't need to blast them with light for them to thrive. I think that's easy enough right?
