Default Black Dormant Eye on Catt

I'm pretty sure this is not a good sign but thought I might check this forum first before I jump to conclusions.
One of my catts has an all black dormant eye on the lead PB. Is it possible an older eye will take the lead?

I have experienced the same problem with my older Cattleya (the first one I bought). Each time a new eye appears each time it turned black. I think this is due to a virus.

Ok. While this may be due to the presence of Boisduval Scales. I sometimes lost the production of a new pseudobulb because of the presence of boisduval scale between the new eye and the old pseudobulb. This year I sprayed some insecticide (dimethoat) on each young eye as a preventive method.

Could it be any other reason, this guy is pretty healthy and free of any bugs that I can visually see

Your photos are badly out of focus. You probably have a camera that cannot focus from as close up as you attempted.

From what I can see (and conjecture the rest) from what you have said. I think that you don't have very many good roots. I can see 2 new roots starting up ... maybe an inch or two. But for a s bulb plant, there should be more roots showing.

On the right side of the photo, at the base of the plant, there appear to be some roots (photo's blurry so it's hard to tell). But if they are roots, they are very short & seem to have brown tips ... tips are dead. Back of the plant seems to be potted deep. (another hint that you don't have enough roots to hold the plant straight up)

If I'm guessing right about the lack of viable roots, then, it's not surprising you have a dead new eye. Check your roots first. It's hard to tell beyond that since your photo doesn't show enough.

It looks like there is a eye on the othe pb and it is indeed possible for that lead to take over.

pay attention to what others have posted and give this one some tlc and I am sure you will get it to grow well.
