Help Identifying in-situ Cattleya from Peru Male
Default Help Identifying in-situ Cattleya from Peru

A friend of mine is in Peru with some friends and they are hiking to Machu Picchu. He's been posting some photos on Facebook and unknowingly posted a photo of a cattleya-type plant. I would like to tell him what it is and maybe get him looking for some others.

The sheath looks very cattleya-like but I've never seen this many flowers on an inflorescence.

If anyone has any ideas what this may be, or even the correct genus, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

It appears to be an Epidendrum, but I'm not well acquainted enough with them to know which species.

After another look, perhaps Epidendrum secundum or Epidendrum syringothyrsus.

Oh, I didn't even think to look at epidendrums! I saw the sheath and immediately thought cattleya.

I think it looks close to the Epi. syringothyrsus.

Also, I found this link to a book that is available to download called "Orchids of Peru":

Internet Archive: Free Download: Orchids of Peru

One of the first sketches in the book has one of Epidendrum ampliracemum that looks similar, too.

Ooooh, this is great fun trying to find this one!!

I took this photo from our recent OS show and it's labeled Epi. capricornu.

Never mind...lol. Now I see the difference looking at the pictures.

I don't know the name but love its color. That's really pretty.
